The structure is a steel frame with a composite upper floor of in-situ concrete on permanent metal deck shuttering. The slab is connected to the steel beams by shear studs to provide composite action and maximise structural efficiency. External walls are clad in Trespa composite panels fixed to metal stud framing. The lightweight roof has 16.5m clear span providing column free office space at first floor.
The building incorporates a double height void, feature stair and external feature at the common entrance area. The design of these elements involved close co-operation with the architect to achieve the required visual impact with a cost-effective structure.
Storm water was attenuated and treated via permeable block paving to car parking bays. The existing burn adjacent to the site runs close to the building and required a detailed assessment of ground levels and installation of flood prevention measures.
The construction period of six months was preceded by a limited period of design. Pro-active teamwork by the design team and contractor ensured that key decisions were made at an early stage, allowing the fast track programme to be met.
